L4 Literature Review

Strategies employed (including classroom differentiation)

1.Connect (Hook and Hold) (5 mins)
+ Make sure that students have their learning device at hand to carry out the experiment.

2.Acquire and Make meaning (Receive Knowledge and skills, and understanding learning outcomes) (40 mins)

+ Literature Review or Background Research is the term used to look for information through books or internet. Refer to the following webpage for guides on searching for literature:
+ Usually, the recommended search engines are Yahoo or Google or Google Scholar

+ Students also need to check the validity and reliability of the resources using the checklist at:
+ Students are required to determine at least 20 articles and upload the links into the blog.
+ An example is given on the ISS Blog Page below

3.Transfer (Formative checks, reflections, etc.) (5 mins)
+ Remind students to complete the 20 entries per group into the blog page.

Lesson 4

Question that test students on what to look for in searching for information

Plants need nitrogen to build proteins and nucleic acids to grow healthy stems and leaves. Though the Earth's atmosphere is made up of 79% nitrogen, the form of nitrogen found in the atmosphere cannot be used by plants. In this experiment, you will compare plants grown with different amounts of nitrogen fertilizer.

What are the possible research questions that you would ask for in this topic?

·      What are the plants that need nitrogen fertilizers?
·      What are the fertilizers that contain nitrogen compounds?
·      How am I going to grow the plants? (watering frequency, what soil to use, how much soil to use)
·      How do you grow the selected plants? (temperature, in shade or in the sun)
·      How do I carry out the experiment? (the method)
